We asked 3 questions to Alfonsas Jursenas from BPTI (Lithuania)

Why did your company get involved in the COMMANDS?

We see EDF projects as an excellent foundation for industrial integration, enabling us to actively contribute to a unified European defence industry. These initiatives are powerful tools for fostering collaboration, innovation, and technological advancement within Europe.

Our participation in the COMMANDS project aligns with our belief in the strategic importance of AI-powered situation alerts—one of the critical components of both current and future warfare. We strongly advocate for incorporating this capability into European defence systems. The ability to react swiftly and autonomously using AI-driven solutions is essential for enhancing operational readiness and maintaining a competitive edge.

What is your specific role in the project?

Our role primarily focuses on machine learning and AI development to identify drones and mines that pose threats to convoys. Additionally, in collaboration with Aktyvus Photonics, we are responsible for integrating next-generation laser target designation capabilities into military convoys. This dual focus ensures enhanced detection, identification, and precision targeting to bolster convoy security and operational effectiveness.

How do you see the added value of COMMANDS for the European armed forces?

Projects like COMMANDS lay the groundwork for integrating the European defence industry, fostering collaboration and enhancing military interoperability. We believe military cooperation is essential, and initiatives like this enable the development of unified, cutting-edge solutions tailored to the needs of European armed forces. By pooling resources and expertise, these projects strengthen Europe’s collective defence capabilities and technological edge.
